SEATTLE, WA. –  Nearly 100 public-school students, ages 8 through 12, will perform their original works of poetry at the annual America SCORES Seattle Poetry Slam! on December 18th at Emerson Elementary School, 9709 60th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118.  The Poetry Slam! is the showcase event of the fall season of America SCORES Seattle, the only after-school program in King County that empowers underserved youth and strengthens underserved communities through a unique combination of creative writing, soccer, and service-learning. The district-wide Poetry Slam! is a perfect opportunity for these budding Poet-Athletes to share their written work while developing confidence and self-esteem.

“Through poetry we instill in our students a love of writing, language and communication,” said Alexandra Foster, Executive Director, America SCORES Seattle. “When our students get up on stage and perform their poetry, they realize that words give them a voice to create change and express themselves.”

The Poetry Slam! is open to the public and parents, faculty members and community leaders are expected to attend. Doors open at 6:15 pm, with the show expected to start at 6:30 pm. Laborer’s Union Local #242, an affiliate of LIUNA, are this year’s event sponsors.

After the Slam!, in the spring students will continue to hone their spoken word skills and write for action, in hopes of developing a service project that betters their communities. In the future, two lucky Poet-Athletes will be selected in 2025 to take an all expenses paid trip for the annual America SCORES National Poetry Slam! in 2026.

About Us

Seattle SCORES isn’t just an after-school program—it’s a movement.

We’re a growing community of parents, soccer fans, educators, athletes, youth advocates, and neighborhood leaders who believe in building brighter, healthier futures for kids.

At the heart of it all are our Poet-Athletes—elementary and middle school students who gain confidence, character, and creativity through the power of sport and self-expression.

Our blog highlights their stories, celebrates community voices, and shows how SCORES is creating real impact in schools, on the field, and across Seattle—every single day.
